What are Canonical URLs?

In a sense, a Canonical URL is considered to be the URL of the official version, which begs the question, when and why do we use Canonical URLs?

Simply, you use Canonical URLs when you have two pages with the same content. The reason is that Google will penalize sites that have duplicate content, such that a Canonical URL can tell Google which page is the real or official version.

It’s reasonably unlikely that you will need to worry about these on your site, but they’re worth being aware of just in case you do.

Canonical URLs can be easily set though Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin in the advanced area when editing a Post or Page.yoast seo advanced canonical Url
