How do I change permissions for my files so I can edit them using the Template Editor?

In order to edit files through the Theme Editor or Plugin Editor, the files must have adequate permissions set, otherwise WordPress will be unable to do this.

For the majority of users, this wont ever be an issue, and you won’t need to make changes, but if on the off chance you do, this guide will show you how.

To complete this, you will need SFTP/SSH access to your server, and ideally some experience or knowledge of file permissions and the terminal.

Step 1) Connect to your server with SFTP or SSH

Step 2) Locate the file(s) or folder that you wish to change the permissions of.

Step 3) Right click on the file(s) or folder and, depending on your FTP client, select “Show Info” or “Permissions” and you should be presented with a window similar to this.

Step 4) Change the Octet value to 666 if it is not already, and click update.

This should now allow you to edit the files through the WordPress dashboard.
