Configuring Easy Social Share Buttons – Social Share Optimization

In this section of the guide to the Easy Social Share Buttons plugin, we will look at how to setup Social Share Optimization for Facebook Open Graph, Twitter Cards and Google Schema.org.

Facebook Open Graph, Twitter Cards, and Google Schema.org may already be handled by another plugin such as WordPress SEO. Prior to completing these areas check first, and where appropriate, choose just one area to set them up.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) On the left-hand sidebar of the Dashboard, click Easy Social Share Buttons to display the Main Settings tab.

Step 3) Scroll down until you see the Social Share Optimization area and click to select.

Social Share Optimization (SSO)

Step 4) Complete the fields as outlined below:

A. Default share image The Default Share Image will be used when a page or post does not have a featured image or a custom setting for Share Image.

For this example, an image file was uploaded to the Media Library. The full URL of this image was then copied to the clipboard and pasted in to this textbox.

B. Extract full content when generating description Place a checkmark in this checkbox to extract the description as full rendered content.

For this example, this field was checked.

Step 5) Click the Update Settings button to save any changes.

Facebook Open Graph

Step 6) Complete the fields as outlined below:

C. Automatically generate and insert open graph meta tags for post/pages Open Graph Meta Tags are used to optimize social sharing. This option includes the following tags:

  • og:title
  • og:description
  • og:url
  • og:image
  • og:type
  • og:site_name

For this example, this field was checked.

D. Facebook Page URL Enter the full URL to your Facebook page in this textbox.

For this example, the URL to a Facebook page was entered.

E. Facebook Admins Enter the IDs of Facebook Users that are admins of the current page (separate users with commas).

For this example, this field was left blank.

F. Facebook Application ID Enter your Facebook Application ID in this textbox. If you do not have a Facebook Application ID, click here to create one.

You will need a Facebook Application ID in order to use Facebook Insights.

For this example, a Facebook Application ID was entered.

Step 7) Click the Update Settings button to save any changes.

Step 8) Click the Validate Open Graph button to validate your selections and confirm that you have set them up correctly.

Twitter Cards

Step 9) Complete the fields as outlined below:

G. Automatically generate and insert Twitter Cards meta tags for post/pages Place a checkmark in this checkbox to activate this option.

For this example, this field was checked.

H. Twitter Site Username Enter your Twitter Username in this textbox.

For this example, katmandu232 was entered.

I. Default Twitter Card type Select a default Twitter Card Type from the dropdown list.

Summary can be used for many kinds of web content, from blog posts and news articles, to products and restaurants. It is designed to give the reader a preview of the content before clicking through to your website.

Summary with Image features a large, full-width prominent image alongside a tweet. It is designed to give the reader a rich photo experience, and clicking on the image brings the user to your website.

For this example, Summary was selected.

Step 10) Click the Update Settings button to save any changes.

Step 11) Click the Validate Twitter Card button to validate your selections and confirm that you have set them up correctly.

Google Schema.org

Step 12) Complete the fields as outlined below:

J. Activate Google Authorship and Publisher Markup When this checkbox contains a checkmark, Google Authorship will appear only on posts from your blog.

You will need a Google Authorship account in order to use this option. If you do not have a Google Authorship account, click here to create one.

For this example, this field was left unchecked.

K. Google+ Author Page Enter a link to your Google+ Profile in this textbox.
For example, https://plus.google.com/u/0/10651343439077011718/posts

For this example, this field was left blank.

L. Google+ Publisher Page Enter a link to your Google+ Page in this textbox.
For example, https://plus.google.com/[Google+_Page_Profile].

For this example, this field was left blank.

M. Include Google Schema.org base markup Placing a checkmark in this checkbox will include minimal needed markup for Google schema.org (name, description and image).

For this example, this field was left unchecked.

Step 13) Click the Update Settings button to save any changes.

Prior to moving forward, we recommend that you validate the changes applied above and make any modifications as needed.
