In this guide we’ll provide a few ways of being able to import a WordPress WXR file when it says it’s too large to import.

How do I Import a WordPress WXR file when it says it is too large to import?

While there are a number of ways to try and make the server accept the larger file, they’re all either unlikely to work, problematic, or time consuming. Thus, the fastest and easiest way to handle this issue is to break the WXR file into smaller parts.

Step 1) Download the WordPress export file to your computer.

Step 2) Open the XML file in a text editor, not Word or anything similar, just a plain text editor.

Step 3) Divide the file into smaller parts between item tags.

You do this by adding in closing channel and RSS tags, and then copy and pasting the RSS and initial channel tags with their content from above, which will look like so.

Move the content between the RSS tags into its own file, saving in XML format, and uploading one at a time.

It’s a little confusing at first, and definitely somewhat laborious, but it will get the job done.
