How to Use the Login and Users Widgets in Members

In this section of the guide to the Members plugin, we will show you how to add the Login Form and Users widgets to the sidebar.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) From the left-hand sidebar of the Dashboard navigate to Appearance -> Widgets.

For this example, the Login Form and Users widgets will be added to the Main Sidebar.

Adding the Login Form Widget

Step 3) Click to select the Login Form widget.

Step 4) While holding the mouse down, drag the Login Form widget to the Main Sidebar.

Step 5) Release the mouse.

Step 6) On the Login Form widget, click the Up button to display a fly-out window where you can:

  • Modify the Title (what the user will see on the Login Form).
  • Modify the text that will display when a user is logged in and logged out.
  • Modify the values of the checkboxes (checked or unchecked) for Remember Me, Check Remember Me and Display Avatar.
You can also modify the id values.
However we caution against modifying these values as this may make the login procedure invalid.

For this example, no changes were made.

Step 7) Click the Save button to save any changes.

Step 8) Click the Close hyperlink to close the fly-out window.

Adding the Users Widget

Step 9) Click to select the Users widget.

Step 10) While holding the mouse down, drag the Users widget to the Main Sidebar.

Step 11) Release the mouse.

Step 12) On the Users widget, click the Up button to display a fly-out window where you can:

  • Modify the Title of the Users list.
  • Select a new Order By (Sort Field) from the dropdown list.
  • Select a new Display Order (Ascending or Descending) from the dropdown list.
  • Select a Role to view from the dropdown list. If Administrator is selected then only these Users will be displayed.
  • Enter the number of Users to display. If left blank, all Users will display.
  • Enter the Usernames of any Users you want to include on the Users list (if they are logged in).
  • Enter the Usernames of any Users you do not want include on the Users list
  • Enter search criteria to display any Users that match this criteria (if they are logged in).
  • Select a meta_key from the dropdown list and enter a meta_value to view a specific set of Users. For example, selecting last_name, and entering the last name of a User will display only Users matching that last name.

For this example, no changes were made.

Step 13) Click the Save button to save any changes.

Step 14) Click the Close hyperlink to close the fly-out window.

Displaying the Widgets

Step 15) In the Dashboard, mouse over your site’s name to display the Visit Site hyperlink.

Step 16) Click the Visit Site hyperlink to be forwarded to the home page of your site.

If you are logged in, instead of seeing the Login Form, you will see a you are currently logged in message (see screenshot below).

The Users widget will display directly below this.

To view the Login Form, mouse over the Howdy Username in the top right corner to display a sub-menu. Click the Log Out hyperlink and navigate to the home page of your site.
