Step 3) Go through the options and make changes where necessary – including notifying Google and Bing of any changes you make to your Sitemap – This will ensure that the search engines will have the most up to date version of your site in their rankings, and make sure that any pages that are deleted or have been changed are updated. This will eradicate any potential 404 pages confusing and frustrating visitors who find your site via Google.

Step 4) Add any additional pages to the sitemap, including adding the URL to the page – This could include a Contact Form for your site or an Author Page. These are pages that might not be actively crawled by search engines, yet could be an important part of your sitemap.

Step 5) Enter any Categories or Pages that you would like to exclude from the Sitemap – By adding these pages, it will discourage the search engines from crawling them and ranking them accordingly. Simply enter the slug or ID of the page you want excluding, separated by commas. For example, contact, about us, portfolio would exclude those three pages from your sitemap.

Step 6) Change the priority of the Home Page or posts or Choose Do Not Override – The more important the pages of your website are, the higher their priority should be when the search engine robots start crawling your site. Your Home Page, for example, would always be 100%, so leave that as Do Not Override at all costs. You can choose to make adjustments to other pages if you wish to.

Step 7) Change the frequency of which you would like the search engines to crawl your site or leave as Do Not Override – This is to give robots an indication of how often a page is likely to be changed/updated, and how often they should crawl the URL. You can change it to ‘Hourly’ or Daily or simply leave it be. The search engines will still actively crawl it as they see fit.
