Canonicalization, Author Highlighting, Webmaster Setup, and More with SEO Ultimate
The final part of the guide to the SEO Ultimate WordPress plugin focuses on the Misc. features of the Plugin. These are settings that were deemed not worthy of their own settings section, but are still important to your sites SEO settings nonetheless.
Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.
Step 2) On the left-hand sidebar of your Dashboard, scroll down to SEO and then choose Miscellaneous from the dropdown. Once on this section, the first section you will come across is the Author Highlighter section. From here, you can set who the Author is for the Blog Homepage and the Archive Pages. This is likely to be the site admin.
Step 3) Duplicate Content is an issue that can see your website being penalised by Google and the other search engines. It can be avoided in most cases, but if you have an About section that is repeated in the Footer section of every page of your site, it can be troublesome. In order to prevent this, you can create canonical URL’s, which redirect the search bots to the original post, so that the other pages are not viewed as duplicates and mess up your search rankings.
On the Canonicalizer section, you can generate meta tags for pages that will send Google to the correct URL for your homepage and each of your posts, Pages, categories, tags, date archives, and author archives. If Google comes across an alternate URL, it will redirect them to the canonical URL and you won’t be penalised. This is especially useful for deleted pages that are still in the search engines. If a canonical URL is included, Google won’t find the 404 page, but the page you have set as the canonical URL.
Step 4) The Link-box Inserter is a great tool which adds a Link to this post box, with a HTML Link attached. Here, you can decide where that box will show, either at the end of posts, posts or anywhere else you put the shortcode to use the linkbox. The HTML code is given in the box, and can be edited or copied and pasted into individual posts and pages. You can also set your own text for the Linkbox.
Step 5) The Permalink Tweaker allows you to take away the URL bases of posts, tags and any other function that sits between the Home URL (http://yourwebsite.com) and the URL of the post/page, etc. For example, a category would show like this in the URL: http://www.wkpb.com/category/permalink-tweaker. Using the permalink tweaker, it would look like this: http://wpkb.com.routing.wpmanagedhost.com/permalink-tweaker. It shortens your URLs considerably, but can also make for duplicate URLs. If this happens, you can use the URL conflict resolution tool to give the URL to pages or the term archive.
Step 6) The Sharing Facilitator tool allows you to disable sharing buttons for social media, email, etc. or to use the ShareThis or AddThis button. If you are want to use sharing tools, decide which one you want to use and set it as the provider.
Step 7) The Webmaster Verification Assistant can be used to add Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Center to your website via a Meta Tag. This will help both search engines to check your site for any issues (including broken links and 404s) and inform you via the website.
This concludes our guide of the SEO Ultimate plugin.
