How to Setup Your Content Area in a Headway Themes Grid Layout

In this section of the guide to Headway Themes, we will focus on how to add, modify, delete and switch blocks in the grid layout for the Content Block.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) From the top toolbar, navigate to Headway -> Visual Editor -> Grid.

Add & Modify the Content Block

Step 3) Right mouse click over the Content area to display a pop-up menu.

A black pop-up box also displays to show the dimensions of the Content area.
Hover over this area and drag the mouse to expand/reduce the Content width/height.

Step 4) Select Open Block Options to display the Content Block section at the bottom of the page.

Mode Tab

Step 5) Click the Mode Tab at the bottom of the page to display the available options.

The content block is extremely versatile. If the Default Mode is selected, it will do what you expect it to do. For example, if you add this on a page, it will display that page’s content. If you add it on the Blog Index layout, it will list the posts like a normal blog template and if you add this box on a Category layout, it will list posts of that category. If you wish to change what the content block displays, change the mode to Custom Query and use the settings in the Query Filters tab.

For this example, the default value of Default Behavior was not changed.

Step 6) Click the Save button on the top toolbar to save any changes.

Display Tab

Step 7) Complete the fields as shown below:

A. Read More Text If excerpts are being shown or a featured post is truncated using WordPress’ read more shortcode, then this will be shown after the excerpt or truncated content.

By default, this field is checked. For this example, no change was made.

B. Show Titles If you wish to only show the content and meta of the entry, you can hide the entry (post or page) title by removing the checkmark from this checkbox.

C. Show Archive Title? If you wish to turn off the page title on archive layouts (category, tag etc.), uncheck this field.

D. Show Read More Show and hide the continue reading or read/more text/button.

E. Entry Content Display The Entry Content is the actual body of the entry. This is what you enter in the rich text area when creating an entry (post or page). When set to Normal, Headway will determine if full entries or excerpts should be displayed based off of the Featured Posts setting and what page is being displayed.

Select Hide Entry Content to create a simple listings of posts.

For this example, Show Excerpts was selected.

F. Show Entry By default, the entries will always be shown. However, there may be certain cases where you wish to show the entry content in one Content Block, but the comments in another. With this option, you can do that.

By default, this field is checked. For this example, no change was made.

G. Comments Visibility When set to Automatic, the comments will only show on single post pages. However, there may be times where you want to force comments visibility to allow comments on pages. Remove the checkmark from the checkbook to hide the comments if do not want to see them at all.

Create unique layouts by using this option in conjunction with Show Entry option to show the Entry Content in one Content Block and show the comments in another Content Block.

For this example, the default value of Automatic was not changed.

H. Featured Posts Featured Posts are the posts where all of the content is displayed, unless limited by using the WordPress more tag. After the Featured Posts are displayed, the content will automatically switch to showing automatically truncated excerpts.

For this example, the default value of 1 was not changed.

I. Show Older/Newer Post Navigation This option, if checked, will display links at the bottom of the loop for the visitor to view older or newer posts.

By default, this field is checked. For this example, no change was made.

J. Show Single Post Navigation By default, Headway will display links to the previous and next posts below an entry when viewing only one entry at a time. By removing the checkmark, you can hide these links.

K. Show Edit Link The Edit link is a convenient link that will display next to the Post Title. This link will take you directly to the WordPress Admin where you can edit the entry.

By default, this field is checked. For this example, no change was made.

L. Enable Column Layout Enable this option to display articles side by side as columns.

By default, this field is unchecked. For this example, no change was made.

Step 8) Click the Save button on the top toolbar to save any changes.

Meta Tab

Step 9) Click the Meta Tab at the bottom of the page to display the available options.

The Entry Meta is the information that appears below the post title and below the post content. By default, it will contain information about the entry author, the categories, and comments.

Step 10) Complete the fields as shown below:

M. Entry Meta Display (Per Post Type) Click the Pencil icon to display the Options pop-up window.

Hold down the CTRL key down and click to select multiple options.

Single click anywhere outside this area to confirm the selections and close the pop-up window.

N. Meta Above Content Click the Pencil icon to display the View Textarea pop-up window.

Modify the text as needed.

Single click anywhere outside this area to confirm the change(s) and close the pop-up window.

O. Meta Below Content Click the Pencil icon to display the View Textarea pop-up window.

Modify the text as needed.

P. Date Format From the dropdown box, select a Date Format.

For this example, the format Feb 19, 2015 was selected.

Q. Time Format From the dropdown box, select a Time Format.

By default, the value is WordPress Time. For this example, no change was made.

R. Comments Edit the appropriate textboxes to change the formatting of the Comments area. See the available code options above.

Step 11) Click the Save button on the top toolbar to save any changes.

Comments Tab

Step 12) Click the Comments Tab at the bottom of the page to display the available options.

In the Comments are you can customize each message. See the available code options above.

Featured Images Tab

Step 14) Click the Featured Images Tab at the bottom of the page to display the available options.

Step 15) Complete the fields as shown below:

S. Show Featured Images If you want to display Featured Images, leave the checkmark in the checkbox.

By default, this field is checked. For this example, no example was made.

T. Image Position From the dropdown list, select an Image Position for the Featured Images.

By default, the value is Left. For this example, no change was made.

U. Use Per-Entry Featured Image Positions IN the WordPress write panel, there is a Headway Meta Box that allows you to change the Featured Images position for the entry being edited.

By default, this block will use this value, but you may want to remove the checkmark so that the blocks thumbnail position is always used.

For this example, the checkmark was removed.

V Featured Image Size (Left/Right) Drag the blue circle to increase/decrease the size of the Featured Images or enter the directly in to the textbox.

For this example, no change was made.

W. Featured Image Height Ratio (Above Title/Content) Drag the blue circle to increase/decrease the size of the height ratio above the Content Title or enter the directly in to the textbox.

For this example, no change was made.

X. Crop Featured Images If you want Headway to automatically crop the Featured Images, leave a check in this checkbox.

For this example, the checkmark was removed from this field.

Step 16) Click the Save button on the top toolbar to save any changes.
