Customizing the Share and Follow Button Display in Social Media Feather

In this section of the guide to the Social Media Feather plugin, we will take a look at configuring the options to streamline the look and feel of the Social Media Feather plugin.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) On the left-hand sidebar of the Dashboard navigate to Settings -> Social Media.

General Settings

These settings affect the general behavior of the plugin.

A. Use Shortlinks Placing a check mark in this check box allows for shortened URLs to be used when sharing content (if a shortening plugin is installed).

For a list of URL Shortener Plugins, navigate to Plugins -> Add New and enter URL Shortener in the Search Plugins textbox.

B. Share Full URL Placing a check mark in this check box determines whether to always share the full URL or just the post permalink.
C. Right To Left Layout Place a check mark in this check box if you have a right-to-left site layout and icons show spacing issues.
D. Shortcodes In Widgets Place a check mark in this check box to allow Shortcodes in Widgets.
E. Show Credit This option displays a small icon with a link to the Social Media Feather page. The default value is checked.
F. Default Message Enter/modify the default message to use when sharing content.

Automatic Display

These settings affect automatically appending social buttons to post contents.

G. Display Sharing Buttons Place a check mark in this check box to automatically append Sharing buttons to your posts. If you want to add Sharing buttons to specific posts only, remove the check mark.
H. Share Buttons Position From the dropdown list select the position of your Sharing buttons. The default value is After Post.
I. Sharing Single Posts If a check mark is placed in this check box, Sharing buttons are only displayed on single posts/pages and not on archive pages. For example, the Sharing buttons will not be displayed on: blog/category/tag/author pages.
J. Share Post Types Select the Post types where you want the Share buttons to appear.

Note: Press CTRL+Click to select multiple options.

K. Share Prefix Markup Enter text to be displayed before the Share buttons.
L. Share Postfix Markup Enter text to be displayed after the Share buttons.

M. Display Follow Buttons Place a check mark in this check box to automatically append Follow buttons to your posts. If you want to add Follow buttons to specific posts only, remove the check mark.
N. Follow Buttons Position From the dropdown list select the position of your Follow buttons. The default value is After Post.
O. Follow Single Posts If a check mark is placed in this check box, Follow buttons are only displayed on single posts/pages and not on archive pages. For example, the Follow buttons will not be displayed on: blog/category/tag/author pages.
P. Follow Post Types Select the Post types where you want the Follow buttons to appear.

Note: Press CTRL+Click to select multiple options.

Q. Follow Before Share Place a check mark in this check box if you want the Follow buttons to appear before the Share buttons.
R. Follow Prefix Markup Enter text to be displayed before the Follow buttons.
S. Follow Postfix Markup Enter text to be displayed after the Follow buttons.
T. Prefix Markup Enter text to be displayed before the buttons markup.
U. Separator Markup Enter the Separator for the markup. Notice a line break was entered here.
V. Postfix Markup Enter text to be displayed after the buttons markup.

Customize Look

These settings customize the look & feel of the Social Media Feather plugin.

  • Icon Skin

    This plugin comes with a set of Regular icons. If you want additional icons from Social Media Feather, click here. There is a fee associated with this.

  • Extra Icon Skins / Gray Fade Effect / Light Prompt Overlay Skins

    To add additional Skins, click the links below. There is a fee associated with each this.
    Extra Icon Skin

    Light Prompt Overlay

AA. Icon Size From the dropdown list select the size in pixels for the icons.
Note: for high resolution displays like Retina the maximum size is 64×64.
BB. Icon Resolution From the dropdown list select what icon resolutions will be used. Single might make the icons slightly blurry on low resolution displays. Double will always look the best but will consume more bandwidth.
CC. Icon Spacing Enter the spacing in pixels between the icons.
DD. Buttons in Container From the dropdown list select whether or not to wrap the buttons in a container. This will affect how the buttons are rendered.
EE. Buttons Container Type Selecting Basic from the dropdown list should not affect rendering, while Block should display the buttons in their own row.

Note: selecting Block might not look the way you want if you’re using Prefix or Postfix markup.

FF. Share Buttons Alignment From the dropdown list select an alignment.
Note: This will enforce Buttons Container Type – Block and may not work reliably on all themes.
GG. Follow Buttons Alignment From the dropdown list select an alignment.
Note: This will enforce Buttons Container Type – Block and may not work reliably on all themes.
HH. Extra Styles Enter additional styles to further customize Social Media Feather.

Service Providers

In this area you can customize social sharing and following providers for the following:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Reddit
  • Pinterest
  • LinkedIn
  • Tumblr
  • Mail Share / Mail Follow
  • RSS
  • YouTube
  • Vimeo
  • Instagram
  • Flickr
  • Foursquare

Click the Save Changes button.

That’s it! The Social Media Feather plugin has now been configured!
