In this WordPress SEO by Yoast tutorial we’ll show you how to configure the General Post Settings. This includes setting the Title and Meta Description, and choosing a focus keyword for the post.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) From the Admin Panel, head to Posts >> Add New. Once in a new post, scroll down to the bottom of the post to find the WordPress SEO by Yoast settings.

Step 3) In General, the first port of call is to create a focus keyword. Once added, WordPress will check to see how many times the word has been used throughout the content, including in the title, meta description, the URL and the content itself.

Step 4) The SEO title is the title that will show up in search results, so make it a good one, containing your focus keyword.

Step 5) The Meta Description is the description that appears below the title of a post in search results.

Step 6) Below is an example of how a completed post snippet should look like. The Focus Keyword section should all be in green, as this means you have included the keyword in each section.

Step 7) The Page Analysis section next to General is useful for providing helpful advice on how to improve the SEO of the post even further. Red means BAD, yellow is not great, and Green is where you’re doing it right.

The next step in the guide will focus on the Advanced Post Settings.
