This guide to the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin will focus on XML Sitemaps, including how to create one, what to include, and how to exclude different sections of your website.

Step 1) Login to the WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2) From the Admin Panel, click on SEO >> XML Sitemaps. A sitemap is important as you can submit it to the search engines to ensure that they scan all of the content of your website. It can improve your rankings considerably. On the General section, you can find your XML Sitemap by hitting the button shown below. You can also set the max number of entries allowed in your sitemap.

Step 3) The User Sitemap section for Author-specific sitemaps. You can choose to disable this feature and just have one sitemap by ticking the box provided.

Step 4) If you choose to allow Author-specific sitemaps, a host of options will appear, allowing you to exclude certain users from having a sitemap, including users with no posts.

Step 5) In the Post Types section, you can cut out certain sections from appearing in your sitemaps, including Posts, Pages and/or Media files, by ticking their boxes.

Step 6) The Taxonomies section allows you cut out Categories, Tags and/or Formats from being included in your sitemap. Just tick the boxes of the options you want to exclude.

The next step in the guide will look at the Advanced Settings of the plugin.
